I think it's interesting to see how in a design,
just a little flourish can make all the difference.

In the bull's eyes, those little whorls on the numerals
give them a character all their own. Like the Aussie
Kangaroo and map, really simple designs, but with appeal
that seems to last forever.

what is that little "P" doing in the top LH corner

Rod, if you're out there, I don't believe BeeSee ever answered your question back in 'Aught Ten'
The P in the upper left corner of the 1958 Canadian Free Press stamp is for the designer, Alan L. Pollock.

That said, here are a couple of back of book submissions for black and white stamps (thanks for reviving this one Daniel. Excellent thread)

1919 US Post Office Seal canceled in Salt Lake City, Utah.

And Canadian cigarette stamps circa 1975? (I remember my Dad peeling them off his pack of Du Mauriers and saying "hang onto these, they'll be worth something someday!") Sorry Dad, but...

Sometimes I think the starkness of black and white says a lot more than even the brightest colours.
Some examples left to right.

France 1930 SC258 art deco design for Colonial Exposition
Romania 1928 postal tax SCRA15 'charity'
Switzerland 1941-59 SC273 'dying soldier'

This sheet, if you really want to be picky, isn't strictly B&W

Czechoslovakia has a ton of b&w stamps. Here's a semi-postal souvenir sheet, b152 from 1938, along with it's two more colorful versions. Engraved, if anybody wants to know.
