Japanese occupation of China - 1941 - Honan overprint (large setting) - 2c martyr - no wmk.

Only the watermarked variety of this stamp is listed in Gibbons (SG 63B). Does anyone know if any of the other catalogues list an unwatermarked variety?

Scott lists a candidate as 3N44. If someone will check my work, I'd appreciate it, as I'm far from a China expert.

Cjd, I don't have Scott unfortunately, but I think you're right. One of the most authoritative ebay sellers of Chinese stamps - cretko, who's in Hong Kong - lists this item under this number, specifically stating that it's unwatermarked. Cretko knows his stuff, so my conclusion is indeed that it's 3N44.

Some information from peddler.

I have checked the Collin's work via Scott 2008 , and I fully agree with Collin.

By Ma's 2010, corresponding number is »ª±±#72, C/V CNY15 for mint, CNY 4 for used. In jimjamtwo's picture, looks the character ÄÏ is also broken at top right corner , if so the stamps is »ª±±#72a, no corresponding listed in Scott, C/V CNY100 for mint, CNY30 for used.

Hope this help.

Actually, jimjamtwo, I think your stamp is SG 47A - the small Honan, not the large, from a comparison with the illustrations in my elderly Gibbons.

Yes jimjamtwo, as Tony indicated, the catalog numbers above are all for small typeface.

Zhang, the character is not broken - it just gets very thin in that area. I think you can see in the scan that there's a line there, just a rather small one.

tonymacg, thanks for locating the correct SG number. I had overlooked that section entirely. The SG CV is £11.50 (used or unused), which isn't too bad!

Thanks for the contributions, guys!
