Hi guys, I am from Serbia and I have a couple of thousand mint condition Serbian stamp that are mostly very limited or special editions. Would any of you know how I would go about selling them to a serious collector. None of them are marked, and they have all been kept in a proper stamp album for around 20-30 years. Please let me know. Thanks Alex
Alex, the alternatives are either selling the collection yourself on a website like Ebay/Delcampe or consigning them for sale through a professional auction house.
If they're all mint and in very fine condition, I think an auction house would be interested.
I also think that an auction house would be able to help you reach the specialists who'd be most interested in buyng your collection.
It'd be useful if you showed some examples to give us an idea of what the collection contains.
Are they old (pre Yugoslavia)? Are the mint stamps mounted with hinges or inside stamp holders?
And are you sure you want to sell them all? If they were collected by a relative or friend, they will have sentimental value as well - and stamp collecting is a great hobby! There have been some very beautiful stamps from Serbia, from both the pre and post Yugoslavia eras. And some wonderful stamps from Yugoslavia as well.
Depends on whether you wish to spend the time selling the stamps in small lots yourself (more money for you) or as one large lot (less money for you usually).
Selling yourself may take time and you have to learn something about the stamps yourself in order to sell them correctly identified and so you don't lose money yourself.
Catalogues of various makes and brands will give you the year and series's name for a stamp or group of stamps, and a catalogue number that some collectors use. Not all use the same catalog worldwide unfortunately.
To sell yourself you will need a scanner to get a picture of the stamps or stamp, or have access to one, perhaps at a public library or from a friend or family.
You can also read about stamps and see catalogues perhaps at a library, or even buy an older catalogue that gives you the information but doesn't have current prices, which isn't that bad really, as people do not pay the catalogue price except for a beautiful condition stamp, that has nice gum (glue), colour, paper, no damage, nice centering, nice postmark if used.
Lots of detail but not always necessary to sell. Just roughly know what the stamps are worth from a catalogue or looking at Delcampe or similar sites online.
As David mentioned, post pictures here and we can help with the values and identification. But you still need a scanner or electronic camera.
