I have always been a plane buff and have had an interest in "flying boats" since the early days of black and white tv through programs such as China Smith and Charlie Chan, which showed these planes at various spots over the Pacific and, of course, everyone remembers the Pan Am Clipper in the Raiders of the Lost Ark movie.

My interest increased a few years back after reading the novel Night Over Water by Ken Follett, whose story centres on the last Pan Am Clipper flight from the British Isles over the Atlantic to Botwood, Newfoundland then to Shediac, New Brunswick and on to the New York area. I have also seen a movie that was made from this book or at least a movie that was made for TV.

If I remember correctly there were only about a dozen of these planes made and the route I mentioned was short-lived. Does anyone have stamp images of this plane or first day covers that feature this trans-Atlantic route or any other route that it was used on?

The 25c (Scott C20) was issued to pay postage on mail transported by the Transpacific air mail service, inaugurated Nov 22, 1935.

The 20c and 50c (Scott C21 and C22) were issued Feb 15, 1937 primarily for use on Transpacific service to China but were valid for all air mail purposes.

Edited to replace missing images.

Thanks for the links. I enjoyed them. The old news reels on youtube were fantastic. It must be my age but I never think to go there unless someone prompts me.

Tomiseksj - decided I should check my albums after seeing your stamps and it turns out I have a used 50c China Clipper that is postmarked Birmingham. I was happy to see that.

I was a child in Manila when the first China Clipper came. I have a cover from the return flight on Dec. 3, 1935, which my father sent to his brother in Rochester NY. Here is a photo of my mother, brother, and me with the China Clipper.

What a coincidence you have this beautiful photograph to show in this thread. A family treasure for sure.

You have wonderful covers. I specially like the one showing the Pan Am clipper and the tallship.

Are you aware you have a Lady Keith Smith cover?

That would be a valuable cover to Australia flight collectors!

I spent more than 7 hours in a plane and the only thing that made it bearable was that I was sitting up front. So, plenty of bourbon and ice made the trip almost enjoyable. Once I landed I was quickly leied, with a garland or wreath of flowers. Keep it clean guys! Hawaii, a great place & fantastic trip.!

Lady Keith Smith, couldn't find out much about her by just doing a quick Google search. That being said, I'm glad to know that the cover is more special than I thought. I just thought that it was a 1st flight cover to New Zealand.
