I am sorting Japanese stamps according an old catalogue. I'd like to know their actual CV, Mnh and used (maybe as a reference base: 100 franc, 1.50 fr, 2 fr etc.) or a Scott nr., eventually other info about `Port Arthur` cancellation. Thanks.
The first 1 Sen. either Scott# 10 or 10A Depending on the paper whether it's Wove (10) or laid (10A) paper. CV $50 & 52 MNH or $26 & $29.00 for fine used Next 3 appear to be: Scott # 99 Rose $6 MNH or $1.25 used, add $1 to each if it's Pink, hard to tell from scan Scott #106 Blue / green $60.00 MNH or $1.00 used Scott #107 Red / Brown $60.00 MNH or $2.00 used
I think those are correct, hopefully someone that knows Japanese items will stop by shortly to either confirm or correct.
I know very little about Japanese stamps, but the Port Arthur cancellation is interesting.
Port Arthur was later known by the Japanese pronunciation of its Chinese name, as Dairen. Its Chinese name is Talien (Wade-Giles) of Dalian (Pinyin). It was the major Russian port in Manchuria before the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5. The Japanese won the war, and took Port Arthur from the Russians as part of the prize. I don't know when they renamed it (back) to Dairen.
I'm not sure how dates were being written in Japanese cancellations in those days. If they were written as year -> month -> day, the '9' in the cancellation would make the year 1920. (Of course, if they were written the other way around, the '9' would be the day, and the year is unknown.)
