I went to the post office today, to collect the mail for work and to post some stamps for Smauggie. When I went to the counter, the guy behind the counter said, "You collect philatelic, don't you", to which I replied, "Sure do". He then held out a small stack of first day covers and gave them too me. I was happy as a pig in poop. Many of these stamps I don't have already. I guess, now they have no FDC's on display, they aren't selling any more, so he just wanted to clear them out. Anyway, here is what I received... Steve

Excellent.
And I think this emphasizes the point (posted in a different thread) about building a relationship with the clerks at your local post office.

Steve, things must work differently in Australia than here in Canada because I don't remember anyone getting anything for free from the Post Office. Even getting something on sale at the Post Office is a rarity. Great looking covers that you got. |

Good covers. To echo what Kirk said, a good relationship with the clerk (s) at the PO is a nice thing to have. You can get all sorts of favors. |

It's hard to build a relationship with the clerks at this post office, they turn over a lot of staff. Maybe they are a training office and when they become proficient they are moved on. The only one that has been there all the time is the manager. The guy that served me, has done so, maybe only twice before, but he would have seen me come in regularly. Steve |

That's great. It's like you won your own personal philatelist's lottery. Every time I go to the PO to pick something up, I mention that I'm a collector and try to chat with the tellers. It's always better to have a good relationship with them. Maybe they'll see something behind the counter that looks 'odd' and save it for us collectors. |

Well done Steve, I love/hate the way these things always happen to other people! If you have a Kingfisher cover you could part with I'd be happy to accommodate it's departure................ |
