Hello, I had a pile of sc 92 and 93 stamps and found one each of imperf versions. So they have a number under the scoll or michael system? Thanks for any help you can provide. Jon

G'day,
could you please explain the scoll or michael system please?

These are listed in Gibbons, only for these two values
in kopecks, and the 2 and 3 rouble values.
They must be in pairs and were valued at 40 quid in 1965

I've not seen singles like yours before.

SG changed their numbering system for Russia some time in the 1970s. These two are now SG 130a and 131a. These are still listed as pairs in the traditional way to try to exclude forgeries though clearly the stamps would normally used one at a time like these. The prices for mint pairs are now £400 each.

SG now list a 4k imperf pair also but this is unpriced.

Thanks Nigel.
Not a bad investment in 1965 for these then.

Thank you Nigel. So is that normal to only list something in a catalogue as a pair even though they would likely be used one at a time? Jon

Hi Jon and welcome. For many imperforate stamps the only way to be sure that the stamp is genuinely imperforate is to have a pair that can be seen to be imperforate between them. Otherwise, perforations can be shaved, especially on issues with jumbo margins, to make perforated stamps look imperf. It is a sad state of affairs, but there is a price to pay for those who worship at the altar of the almighty buck.

Where the same stamp exists perforated and imperforate, and the imperforate version is more valuable, it's normal to collect the imperforate only in pairs. It's just too easy to find a perforated single with extra large margins, and trim off the perforations.

Somewhere, at the back of a drawer, I have a small accumulation of the India ½ Anna of 1865, all imperf and nicely tied by cancellations to small pieces of paper. The perforated version is worth £1.60 used; the imperforate version is worth £1200 ... My copies aren't sitting at the back of the drawer because I haven't yet got around to putting them in the bank
