Hi,

I think it is a Scott 57a but Senegal is write on. It's like "missing ink" than "Senegal omitted"... maybe it is same thing?

Is this a common design type? That is, has France used the same design for other colonies and just printed the name of the colony needed in the blank space?

I do not have a world Scott or Gibbons catalogue on hand but if I did these common designs would be shown in the front pages with a list of the different French (and British colonies used the same idea also) colonies' names listed beneath.

How so ever even if it is one of those, it is still unique in that it was not having the colony name printed on it and used for postage (looking at the cancel). Most likely this would be better if on a cover / lettre but still would command a premium among error or oddity collectors of French colonies.

One problem with this that I can see is the onlt partial cancels. There are no cancels that are full or fully shown. This flips a switch in my mind that says watch out for a faked postal usage as this variety would be worth more properly used than mint perhaps?

Still, no matter, a nice example of under-inking or completely not being inked.

You can see a faint impression of "SENEGAL". Scott lists Senegal omitted variety but I think that this might be a color fade or washout (just my guess).

Since the senegal was in blue or red, concern about a fake is real, depending on how good the blue or red ink was.

OOps, I see what you mean -- a faint gray senegal impression is visible -- possible residue left after bleaching out the blue or red ink?
Someone with knowledge of this issue -- certainly not me -- is needed.

It is a possibility but i'm surprise because the stamp color. Seem to be good. If I look with loop, I don't see color... only blank letters.

Thank you!

Notice that the country name is printed by typography. That means the letters, wether inked or not, could leave an indentation in the paper. That may be what we are seeing, so the stamp could be genuine.

Here is the Scott listing, I have the 2008 P-S home from the library.
