A recent question about Guatemala fiscals has the wheels going in my head....most of us have lots of revenue stamps in our back of book...but I rarely see a revenue or fiscal on paper..doing the work it was supposed to do !! Exceptions I have seen are Canada and the United States..bills etc:

Nothing very exotic, but I have some inherited amongst my Grandparents' papers. Kept by them not for philatelic reasons - but because they never threw anything out! and very glad I am too...
Here's a receipt for a lady's kilt bought by my Grandfather in 1943. I wonder how many clothing coupons that cost him and my Grandmother? Oh just realised, that's what it says on the left -"14 Coupons received".

I think its "2nd Lt. A. Galbraith" as in "2nd Lieutenant". He would have been the customer who bought the kit.

Yes, nigelc - he was my Grandfather! He was serving in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

Excellent, so did he buy this for your grandmother to wear? I can imagine them enjoying themselves in wartime dances and ceilidhs.

I don't know, nigel, I would imagine so. In Nov 1943 they had been married just over a year. Unfortunately neither of them is around any more to answer the question. They just left me drawers full of papers to sort, mull over, become absorbed in...

Queen Victoria revenue.
On account to Mrs Smart Abercrombie Street Glasgow 1885

From J Simpson Marriage Carriages and Undertaker.

Unfortunately damaged,
looks like he charged 8d for mourning letters as well?

I think 5 pounds to be expensive in 1885?
Poor scan..old scanner.

Good call on starting this thread! Nice One! Here is one of a pair that joined the team not too long ago!

GB KGV 2d. Sideface
Used- June 30 1928
Payment made by- Mr.A.S. Freestone (Grocer)
For Goods from- Palethorpes (producer of cooked meats/sausage)
*previous collector has handily noted the stamp to be a "perfin revenue" directly in the middle of the sheet!

Here is a closer look at the Illustration:

And a closer look at the stamp and the beautifully stylized company name :

I am now keeping my eyes peeled for this type of useage but with my favorite stamp, the 1d. Downey Head......anybody?!

I look forward to hopefully seeing some other interesting items, the ones shown so far are fantastic, and I know there is potential for some real eye candy in this thread!

Have a Good One,
Skilo54

With the Palethorpes one must assume the secretary had
a roll of these attached to the typewriter,
She types over the revenue and receipt, after attaching
the due revenue, presumably most would be the same value.

About as much as you Phil! You spend a lot of time here
I still have time to read and cycle 25 Kms a day
Perhaps because I don't watch much TV
