Anyone know why Slovakia does not have a Scott number #1? Here is the listing from 2008.

because there is no #1
When they are not sure if there is an earlier stamp, they leave the #1 off, just in case.

I suspect that Czechoslovakia #254A, January, 1939, might have been Slovakia #1 at some point in Scott-land. It commemorates the opening of the Slovakian parliament with an overprint. (Czechoslovakia #254B is the Carpatho-Ukraine issue from March, 1939.)

I wonder if both of them were put back into Czechoslovakia at a later date, and stuck between 254 and 255. According to Scott, 255 was issued exclusively for use in Slovakia, so that might be a candidate, too, but it has its own Scott number, and not an after-the-fact number.

Someone with a Scott from the 1940's might be able to answer this definitively.

In my 1943 Scott, Slovakia number 1 is indeed the 10k blue 1936 Czechoslovakian stamp surcharged 300h in Orange Red, i.e., the current 254A.

well then, I stand corrected. What I previously said was my understanding. I guess Scott changed their mind.

The SG listing for Slovakia also starts with SG 2 which has the following note before it:

No. 362 of Czechoslovakia overprinted "Otvorenle slovenského snemu" and date "18.1.1939" and surcharged "300 h." which was formerly listed as No. 1 of Slovakia is now listed as No. 393b of Czechoslovakia.

That would explain the tread marks over the 10k. Oh wait, they are red.

OK, I definitely need to get more sleep...
