Edit:

I just received this lot, today, and am stunned at the catalogue values. Of particular interest are the stamps on page 2. Can anyone verify the notes on the pages? Are the plate numbers correct? Also, being color blind, I can't tell if the stamps labeled '20B' are the correct color.

Thanks in advance!

Brian

I need to avoid online auction sites ...

Here's another "bright, shiny object" that caught my attention and made my wallet $30 lighter.

Is that a penny black on the second image?

That's a pretty assemblage.

Keep in mind that the CVs for a lot of GB material are sky high, and only the really premium pieces get near those numbers. "Regular" stuff can often be had for 10% of catalogue - less in quantity.

Looks like a penny black was pinched from the first row, first page. They could have had the decency to take the mount, so it wouldn't be a constant reminder. What is the note next to the penny black on page two? Something on the order of "hard paper, like card"?

Some interesting cancels there, too.

In my case, far less than 3%. I haven't checked condition of anything yet. The "hard paper" Penny black is due to it being pasted to a piece of card. I dare not try to take it off!

The pics of the stamps are way too small for me to make out the numbers.

For our friends who do not live in Scott-land, 20b is the 1856 (or '57...Scott says '57) red brown re-engraved 1d, perf 14. Guessing, only, at SG#37. (I'm not practiced at converting these old Vickis from Scott to SG.)

Ask, and you shall receive!

First picture is a close-up of the alleged 'red-brown' shades. The rest are for plate #s

Thank you! The plate numbers for Scott #43 and #49 are all correct. The plate numbers are at the left and right on the roughly "oval" shaped frame surrounding Vicky.

On the 2-letter penny reds, the plate numbers are not inscribed on the stamps like in the penny reds with letters in all 4 corners. Plate ID can only be made by examining specific features. You would need a good magnifier or a very high resolution picture, and a lot of patience/time. Just to make things frustrating, on used stamps the defining features are sometimes obscured by the cancellation.

...on the 43s, you'll see the plate numbers next to the "POSTAGE" banner.

Rileysan I was looking at those stamps on the auction site, I was going to make a play for them on the off chance that was a penny black so I am dying to know if it is a black ?
That guy does a real good job of giving a bad description but does have great deals.
He has a bunch of penny blacks this week. It seems that he will remove them from album pages and sell them separate I always notice blank mounts where the penny black are meant to be

I think it is, but it's in very poor shape. Probably not worth $10. As for the lot, it was a spontaneous purchase because I thought the price was too low and the seller owed me a refund from another purchase I made that was not as described. As you eluded to ... his descriptions can be downright bad, but the good deals I get more than offset any problems I've encountered. To date, I've made more than 300 purchases from his website.
