The following images are of two Queen Victoria faulty stamps bearing British Army Field Post cancellations dated 1900. The first stamp has a poor quality cancel while the second has a clearer one. Can anyone tell me where the second stamp was cancelled (the second one has a letter "I or 1" above the date and may signify the place where the cancel was applied).
The numeral "1" above the date "MY 14 00" is the field post office number.
Field Post Office 1 was moved to Isabellafontein on May 2 1900, before arriving at Kroonstad on May 15 1900.
A word of caution though with the identification above - Peter Prime, with regard to this particular cancel states quite clearly that "1 is always centred over the day/date". In the scan, the "1" is clearly placed above the "14" of the date, not centered over the day and date at all.
The implication here is that it may be a cancellation from another field post office, such as 21, 31, 41 or 51, where the prefix number has for some reason fallen out of the canceller.
Plateflaw, many thanks for the info regarding the cancellation. I was hoping that the cancel related to the Boer War. I hope that someone can add additional insight regarding the "1" (field post office #) above the date.
