Private delivery companies sold stamps for use on parcels and packets being delivered by the company. Forgeries exist of this stamp (though even the forgeries might have some value).
Hello Rodney, That is indeed taken from the arms of Dundee - a white vase with three lilies on blue. Similarly, Glasgow's arms have the tree, bird, bell and fish.
There's a short discussion about these stamps in the Robson Lowe Encyclopaedia. The original stamps were the Circular Delivery stamps from 1867 such as the red Glasgow one.
Stamps in the same designs were prepared around 1868 with the "Delivery Company" title but these weren't issued.
The genuine versions of the Delivery Company stamps should have the letters T, N D & C in the four corners which I don't see on any of these.
There were were at least five forgeries of these Delivery Company stamps (one with the TNDC letters) including some bogus values such as the Dundee 3d value in the original post (and I assume some bogus colours such as the Dundee 1d value in green which should be pale scarlet).
Hello Nigel, that's great information, I actually thought I had some of my own info, but cannot locate it. (very similar to what you have broadcast)
I have been in a bit of a panic last 6 hours, I picked up my first virus for a number of years (scour virus) that hijacks Google I removed it finally with superantispyware.
