....and they just keep rolling in Thanks gang, both look appropriate. I went on a 40Km bike ride this morning welcoming in a group of "average age =70" doing a 850 Km run. We stopped at a RMB (roadside mail box) to wait for the first team, and what is in the tin, to weight down the mail from wind? You guessed it A telegraph insulator I defeated my lightfingered desire and left it be. |

It is amazing the number of stamps with insulators on them. Who would have thought?
As an aside, here in Georgia USA, the insulators used to be so common that you saw them everywhere. Now in the dinkiest flea market, it is not unusual to see a price tag of $10.00 for a single insulator. |

I aim to take my camera on the next run, Rohumpy I think there are some old telegraph poles in my district, and I'll capture them before they fade.

Unless I am mistaken the far left and far right allow you to attach the phone to the wall and the four in the middle would be attached to wires that allowed your phone to work. I don't think the picture helps you see the attached wires. - Jeff |

Rod, have you ever seen insulators which have a purplish color. That could be caused by the action of the UV on the manganese impurity in the originally clear glass isulator. The manganese is oxidized to the state which causes the purplish color. Actually any old glass which has been exposed to sunlight for many years may do this.
The greenish insulators are green for the same reason that classic Coca Cola bottles are green. They contain an iron impurity in the glass. |

Thanks Daniel & Rod.
I only noticed after I scanned it that there is what appears to be a vertical bar on the left side. Must be a tagging bar. |

I only have opaque, blue and green insulators in my small collection of about a dozen insulators. Online, I've seen many different colors available. I almost took a picture of the ones I have and posted it here. Slowly, the old line poles are being removed. I always want to attempt to remove a few insulators from any downed poles found along the railroad tracks, but I never have nor do I think I ever will. Fees and jail do not appeal to me. |

Hi Rohumpy, No, I have not. However seen the purplish colour in bottles and I think I know what you mean. When kids we used to go to country town tips and dig up their town tips, looking for the banana shaped baby's bottles with the marbles, that was the big prize. Often found the ceramic decorations from old beds. Them were the days... cheap fun.

I just received my first genuine insulators. My home is a converted old Town Hall, I now have underground power, I cut off the above ground connections to the Hall yetsreday, and now have six "you-beaut" ceramic insulators...yay They will become paper weights for stamp magazines etc. |

We have some glass door knobs in the house that have gone from clear to a purple hue with time thanks to being in sunny locations. I do believe, though, that there were some actual purple insulators. Don't quote me on that, but I have seen a few here and there... This one belongs to my boyfriend. |

Cheers, we did a 65 Km cycle ride on Sunday, and stopping for a refresh at the 20Km post, there was an old purple bottle on the ground, and I immediately thought of SCF and the explanation someone gave as why the bottles go purple. Unfornunately I just relaised my insulators are power insulators and not telegraph |
