I am trying to determine how to identify the different types and the paper varieties. Especially difficult is the 9k, as Scott is vague about the differences.

Here are two examples I have:

Front:

Back:

Scott says there are two types of papers, the earliest printings on a thin to thick hand made paper, and later on a thick, smooth machine made paper.

To me, the left stamp appears to be on hand made (thin) paper, the right on machine made.

Scott also describes differences in types based on the location of the "9", but does not illustrate it. In another thread, Butterfly posted this useful illustration from Michel:

Both mine match type II and III according to Scott, but type II only according to Michel. Scott also describes type II as having a solid line around the center shield and type II with two lines. I don't see any difference on the two stamps.

Here is the listing from 2009 Scott:

Any comments on how to identify these stamps?

Yvert uses the same concept as Michel for i.d. (i.e., a picture of the three tablets). Neither of them show differences in lines around the central shield design. Or, at least not in the general catalogues...I don't have a "Specialized" anything for Austria.
