I have this stamp from londonbus1, thank you, and am wondering what bird this is? A stork perhaps? And specifically why it is included (and inside a hexagon) in the Switzerland 1973-74 Architecture / Handcrafts set.

Did the Swiss have hexagonal shaped chimneys that storks nested upon or something like that?

What is it called in the catalogue? Scott, Gibbons, Michel? Does anybody name it specifically? Or recognize what it is from? Looks vaguely medieval or Greek, stylistic definitely.

I guess this bird is a pelican. Used as a Christian symbol, especially by protestant churches . In my church is also represented. It`s the symbol of Jesus Christ. It was believed, that this bird fed his children with his own blood, when it was hunger (the blood of Christ). It cuts it`s chest. It`s just a guess.(you can also see a snake, probably as an allusion to the victory against evil) So I think this image comes from a Swiss protestant church.

Michel: `Decken-Medaillon, Klostermuseum Stein a. Rhein`. So it`s a Christian symbol.

Thank you Wadmalatz, very interesting.

The Michel German translates in Google to
`Ceiling medallion, monastery museum Stein a. Rhein`

I have a picture saved of a hexagon ceiling carving surrounding the Russian eagle in a New York post office.
