On August 1, 1973 South Africa issued a set of three stamps (Sc #s 395-7) to commemorate the birth centenary of S.A. writer and poet C.J. Langenhoven. The two lower values in the set show Langenhoven's signature. From Wikipedia, "Cornelius Jacobus Langenhoven (1873-1913) was a South African poet who played a major role in the development of Afrikaans literature and cultural history. He is best known to have written the words for the national anthem of South Africa Die Stern van Suid-Afrika which was used during the apartheid period.   |

This 90c German stamp (Mi. #2684) of August 7, 2008 was issued to commemorate 200th anniversary of the birth of Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch. Schulze-Delitzsche was a politician and lawyer who founded the German cooperative system.  |

Here is South Africa's May 22, 1974 stamp (Sc #343) commemorating the birth centenary of former Prime Minister Dr. D. F. Malan (1874-1959). From Wikipedia, "David Francois Malan was a South African politician who served as Prime Minister of South Africa from 1948 to 1954. The National Party implemented the system of apartheid, which enforced racial segregation laws. The foundations of apartheid were firmly laid down during his tenure as Prime Minister."  |

This 1998 issue of Belgium commemorates the birth centenary of Brussels-born poet Georges Mogin (1898-1990). The stamp is signed with Mogin's pseudonym/pen name Norge, although Geo Norge was also used.  |

On September 8, 1956 Italy issued this 25 lira stamp (Sc #714) to commemorate the death centenary of physicist Amedeo Avogadro (1776 - 1856). For Stamp Day in 1989, Italy issued this stamp with a profile and signature of Emilio Diena (1860 - 1941) on November 24. From Wikipedia, "Dr. Emilio Diena was an Italian philatelist who specialized in the postage stamps of Italy and published research on the subject. He was probably the best known Continental philatelist of his generation."  |

The 2.40 peso stamp (Sc #C275) on the left is the high value of a set of three airmail stamps issued by Uruguay on May 17, 1964 to commemorate the birth bicentenary of General Jose Artigas (1764-1850). Stamp on the right is a Uruguayan definitive bearing Artigas's profile portrait. Artigas's writings showed that he had studied the works of American revolutionaries including Thomas Paine. The inscription on the stamp states, "My authority emanates from you and ceases before your sovereign presence."
