I definitely have my favorite manufacturers, but what you buy depends on your budget.
- Scott. The old scott specialized albums are great, but if you want to use hingeless mounts, they're a lot of work and after you buy enough packets of mounts, you won't actually save any money. So I'd only go this route if you intend to use hinges.
- Minkus. Same goes for the minkus specialized albums. Good quality, but lots of work if you want to make it hingeless.
- Harris. I don't know if Harris makes a specialized album for Canada, but if they do, I wouldn't wipe my ... with it. Absolutely the worst albums ever made. Sorry about the strong opinion :)
As far as the so-called "Luxury" albums, I don't have specifications, so my comments are based on my own experience.
- Davo albums are of poor quality and expensive. Avoid them.
- Lighthouse is one of my favorites. They really are the best bang for your buck. I often see good, used examples on
ebay for around $100 for volume one (new is around $250). Lighthouse makes a standard and hingeless version of the same albums, so make sure you pay attention if you make any online purchases.
- Schaubek is really starting to make a name for themselves in North America. I have yet to see their Canada albums, but if they're anywhere near as nice as the their US specialized and Germany albums, then they are something special. Schaubek is also one of the most expensive hingeless albums (a set of US specialized albums are $1500 US).
- Kabe. The one Kabe specialized album I own is hands down, the best quality album I've ever seen ... with Schaubek a close second. If I had a limitless budget, I would own all Kabe and Schaubek albums ... such is their quality. I have yet to see their Canada albums, so once again, do some research!
- Lindner & SAFE. I do not own any albums from these two manufacturers so can't offer much of an opinion other than pictures in their ads look nice :)
