Hi guys...we look at stamps all the time and our brains see what we think should been seen when it comes to colours..Here is an example..This is a normal Scott #628 Xmas stamp...When I use my colour identification software, surprise there are colours there that we probably would not have noticed...See example below.

I'll try and post some pics later but I have noticed big variations in shades under UV light where under normal light they look identical.
This is for French stamps though and it is not paper or phosphor/brightener related as for the stamps in question there are no listed varieties.

Her: Darling, do you like the colour of my eyes?
Him: What?
Her: The colour of my eyes silly. Do you like it?
Him: Wait a sec. I have a magna spectromer here somewhere. I'll have a look-see.

There are some women (tetrachromats) who can see many more colours than the regular person (trichromats)

Here is one example from the 1977 Sabine de Gandon issue.
You can see that there is some colour variation when scanned but in reality it is much less obvious but even so the difference is small for used stamps.

Under UV the difference is significant but difficult to show online.

The left stamp is dark blue under UV where the right stamp remains purple.
