I joined SCF in June of last year, so it is coming nigh on my first year anniversary of my return to philately and stamp collecting and accumulation.

In that time I have read a number of threads here containing posts which suggested that the Mint No Gum (NG) stamp was at the very bottom of the totem pole as regards desireability (despite objections from the Gluestick Brigade). We also talk about preserving our stamps for subsequent generations of collectors.

Having since collected and seen stamps in all states of mounting, I have come to an interesting conclusion. If a collection is actively manageged, hinging and re-hinging mint stamps does little to the attractiveness of the business-end (the front) of the stamp.

The real problem comes from the true and utter dolts in philatelic history who have deemed themselves worth to create a hinge that will damage the stamp when removed. This means that there are a whole class of mint stamps referred to as Mint Hinge Remnant (HR). Mint HR is seen as preferable to Mint NG because most of the original gum is preserved.

When a collection, though, ceases to be actively managed, and even when the collection/album/etc is stored in a clean, dry location away from direct sunlight, eventually the hinges will deteriortate and stain the mint stamps. This results in stamps which are not desirable by even casual collectors of stamps.

This has resulted in some conclusions on my part:

1) Hinged stamps will damage stamps if they are left unmanaged for an extended period of time.

2) If I have a collection of stamps that is hinged, I need to ensure that they will be properly taken care of relatively soon after I am gone.

3) If I intend to store my own stamps in an album or stockbook for an extended period of time (using plastic mounts), the stamps I put in them need to be free of any hinge material on the back to prevent deterioration of the stamp.

Therefore: Mint NG from the perpective of long-term preservation of the stamp is superior to Mint HR (also superior to Mint OG with a thin).

Do you agree?
If not, why? I would be happy to read other people's ideas on this topic.

Happy collecting!

Edit - Spelling correction. Grammar correction.
