Ok Nigel and all you Great Britain guys. I am in Great Britain with this worldwide collection that I bought and would like any and all information that people may have. For example, I marked this as Scott #11 and this one has a 752 postmark. Would anyone know if 11 is correct and where 752 is? And it really appears to be on bluish paper but can anyone tell red brown or orange brown, or lake red??

jhlovell, your stamp is Scott#3 and the 752 cancel refers to Stowmarket (Suff.)
Regards
Mike

jhlovell, I can't speak to the color of the stamp given that your scanner may not display its true color. Apparently there are innumerable variations of color and shade in the penny red.

Realizing that scanners and monitors may not show true colors, I don't think it is the lake red shade. I have a set of 6 of the shades, as listed by Gibbons and bought from Gibbons, of the penny red imperf. THe lake red is unmistakeable, once seen. It has a purplish undertone.

From just your scan, I would classify the shade as the red brown. Have you looked at the back of the stamp to see if it is an ivory head?
