Hello, I would look these up myself but I don't have the Scott A-B book.I would be most highly appreciated if someone will give me the catalog numbers for these stamps.I also have an Austrian stamp that I need the catalog number for.The Austrian is perf 9 or 10. I am still a tiny bit confused on perf counts. If I count the perf I use to set the ruler it is perf 10, if not it's perf 9. Thank you very much David As a side note--Hugo Fritzsching, to whom this cover is addressed, opened a company in 1884 tha manyfactured textile machinery that is still in business today.

The Austria is #54 and comes with a variety of perfs. Scott says "Perf 9 to 131/2, also compound" |

fincbob, the blue and white stamp on your Bahrain cover has been sitting in my "don't have a clue which country" pile for ages, so thanks for helping me ID the country for a start! I did wonder if it was an actual stamp - its certainly very different fromt the other two on the cover. I am awaiting more infor with interest |

Stampgal,
The blue and white stamp is a Tax stamp, actually a War Tax stamp issued in 1974. I do not have definite info on who benefitted from this tax, but my search will continue.
I can guess, but I won't !

Quote: I thought it may be a cenderella as there is no value on it The value is at the bottom, 5 Fils. What looks like a '0' is an Arabic '5' and the underlying word is 'Fils'. The cover is from 1977, the two stamps are from a 1976 definitive series. I wonder how long they had to use these compulsory stamps for ?? Three and half years must have made quite a bit of money. Does anyone have a cover with a much later date PLUS the 5 Fils Tax stamp ? Londonbus1 |

londonbus1, Thanks for the insight on these stamps, especialy the war tax stamp. It got me to wondering why Bahrain would need a war tax stamp. The only thing I could see on Wikipedia was that Bahrain's neighbor Lebanon was fighting a civil war in the 1970's. Thanks David |

These 'War Tax' stamps were issued to raise funds for Palestinian refugees following the Israel-Arab war of October 1973. The funds actually went to the Arab League. Rod222 is correct in saying the tax was obligatory. All mail was subject to the 5f. tax. Before 'War Tax' stamps became available, the handstamp below was applied to 5f. postage stamps after they were affixed to the cover. Definitely one to keep an eye out for. |
