Those are nice. I've got a few of that set but not all of them. For awhile, my main collecting focus was Turkey, Turkic countries and the countries of the former Ottoman Empire. |

Wow those are just gorgeous issues! I would be proud to own these even though I only collect US and Australia postage. I like how they used nice colors and didn't perforate them. Very nice collection I.M.H.O. |

I like those colors though. Does anyone have any examples of these things postally used? The ones in my collection are mint as well. |

I showed this Azerbaijan Scott No. 1 USED in the A-B-C Classic thread, but it also belongs here. |

I checked them against the forgery illustrations in Varro Tyler, and I found none. It is quite common to find forgeries in general collections, so congrats. They appear to be originals rather than the Russian reprints too except for the 10K? (brownish paper). Also the 2r has both columns oriented up (original), as opposed to the Russian reprint that has one column down, one up. (Edit: Actually the 5r and 10r) White paper (original) copies are worth 5X the Scott CV. |

The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic declared its independence on May 28, 1918, but after the Soviet Union invaded the country, the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic was proclaimed on April 20, 1920. That is when the first set (so I have read elsewhere) was reprinted on the yellow-gray paper. See the nicely cancelled 60k block below. However, the cancel appears to be 24-3-20, or March 20, 1920. That would indicate the stamp was printed before Soviet control. Anyone have any reference dates for the reprints? |

Hi BeeSee,
It's hard top judge the paper colour on a monitor but for what it's worth this block appears to me to be from the original October 1919 printing and look like my stamps from that issue while my stamps on "greyish to buff or brownish paper" (to quote SG) appear on darker paper.
SG gives a date of December 1920 for the later issue.
It's fun to see "Bacoud" on the postmark which I assume was a French spelling for "Baku" (although it's usually now "Bakou" in French). |

Nigel, I do have a white paper copy at home (I am at work now). However, it is similar to this 25r I have on white paper. The block and the 25r were scanned together and cropped apart. |

Now I think it is possible that the year may be 19 22, the second 2 being shifted down. That small black line off the top curl may have been a hair or particles stuck on the cancel. Even the 3 could be a 5... |
