rod, I look forward to your other suggestions!
jubilee, the 'O' in your postmark is in the centre. That's extremely interesting, and I look forward to finding out what it means, but the 'H' in my postmark is on the side, which suggests that there's something else on the other side (at least) and perhaps also something in the centre. |

If you look at the other examples on the Premier site, the letters are all over the shop. I can't find any reference to what the codes mean, but it seems that if they needed an "O" they used an old canceller from a PO and removed all the letters except an "O". I think this also applies to your example. A quick flick through my 2d Harbour Bridges has thrown up a couple of "S" examples |

That's what I was assuming, ordinary postal hammers with letters removed leaving one or two letters, as a reference. I don't think the letters have any significance other than registering use at a particular location.

Thanks rod222, jubilee, for that interesting info and great scans. I suppose there's no way of finding out what these one-letter datestamps were for. Anyway, moving along, here's a cancel not listed in the PPA database: Bentleigh S.L.(something). Does anyone know what this one was? |

That's Bentleigh SE14, which was the old style postcode before the four digit ones introduced in the 1960's |

Thanks, jubilee!
These codes must have only been used in Melbourne. At least, I haven't found a datestamp from anywhere else in Australia with one. |

Interesting I don't recall seeing postcode before as that one, I'll have to save to my database :) Well solved.

These used to be ubiquitous in Melbourne. In my early days here, I lived in Ivanhoe N21, and if memory serves, Richmond where I now live was E2. Toorak, the most salubrious suburb in Melbourne, was well known as SE2, and I lived for a while in South Yarra, next door at SE1. |

My latest lot of KGVs contains quite a few Victorian datestamps which I'm finding very hard to identify. Can anyone help with any of the following? Thanks for looking. (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) |

Thanks, jubilee! The 'dsmere' one was the one that was really driving me crazy, so hats off to you for identifying it! |

A couple of stabs at identifications:
(2) Lancefield? (6) Hawthorn West? (8) Whittlesea? (9) Kilmore? |
