Guatemala National Symbols - Columbus Monument September 15, 1902 January 7, 1929 The Columbus monument is located at Plaza del Armas in Guatemala City. The bronze statue was commissioned to the Spanish sculptor Tomás Mur and was inaugurated in June 1896. The Columbus statue, right hand on his chest and left hand pointing to the world at his feet, stands on a sphere. On the equator, the phrase: "Plus Ultra October 12th 1492" commemorates the celebrated date. Holding the world are three vigorous figures representing science, constancy and valor.  |

Portugal Independence Anniversaries and World Fair, Lisbon June 4, 1940 Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) is a monument on the northern bank of the Tagus River estuary in Lisbon. The monument celebrates the Portuguese Age of Exploration and Discovery during the 15th and 16th centuries. The monument was conceived in 1939 by architect Cottinelli Telmo and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida as a temporary beacon during the Portuguese World Fair opening in June 1940. A new monument was constructed with cement and rose-tinted stone between 1958 and 1960 and was inaugurated on August 9, 1960.  |

Portugal 400th Birthday of Luisde de Camões November 11, 1924 Luís Vaz de Camões (1524 – 1580) is considered the greatest poet of Portugal and the Portuguese language. His mastery of verse has been compared to that of Shakespeare, Vondel, Homer, Virgil and Dante. He wrote a considerable amount of lyrical poetry and drama but is best remembered for his epic work Os Lusíadas ( The Lusiads). The Luis de Camões Monument was inaugurated in 1867 at the Camões Square, Lisbon. Under the statue of Camões are the statues of eight other great names from Portuguese literature: Pedro Nunes, Fernão Lopes, Azurara, Castanheda, João de Barros, Sá Menezes, Jerónimo Corte-Real and Vasco Quevedo Castello-Branco.  |

Hungary World Congress for Peace and Disarmament July 7, 1962 The bronze statue Let Us Beat Our Swords into Ploughshares was created by Soviet artist Evgeny Vuchetich and presented to the United Nations on 4 December 1959. The sculpture is meant to symbolize man's desire to put an end to war, and to convert the means of destruction into creative tools for the benefit of mankind. The statue is located in the North Garden of the United Nations Headquarters.  |

Hungary 150th Birthday of Franz Liszt October 2, 1961 Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886) was a prolific 19th-century Hungarian composer and virtuoso pianist. One of the stamps shows his statue at the Hungarian National Opera House in Budapest. The statue was created by Alajos Stróbl (1856 - 1926), a renowned Hungarian sculptor.  |

Italy Artistic Heritage- Fountain of Neptune in Florence February 6, 1992 The Fountain of Neptune in Florence is situated on the Piazza della Signoria, in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. The fountain was commissioned in 1565 and is the work of the sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati (1511 - 1592). The figure of Neptune is made of white Carrara marble. The tank is octagonal and contains the four horses of the chariot of Neptune (two in white marble and two in variegated pink). At the corners of the tank are groups of sea gods (Thetis, Doris, Ocean, and Nereo), each of which has to foot a procession of nymphs, satyrs and fauns in bronze made #8203;#8203;by Giambologna (1529 - 1608).  |

Italy International Exhibition of Agriculture in Rome July 16, 1953 Tyche of Antioch was the presiding tutelary deity that governed the fortune and prosperity of a city. She is the daughter of Aphrodite and Zeus or Hermes. The original bronze statue was the work of Eutychides of Sicyon in Corinthia, Greece. The goddess was seated on a rock, crowned with towers, holding a bunch of grains, and having the river Orontes at her feet.  |

Italy 700th Anniversary of birth of Cola di Rienzo November 23, 2013 Cola di Rienzo (1313 – 1354) was an Italian medieval politician and popular leader, tribune of the Roman people in the mid-14th century. He advocated the abolition of the Pope's temporal power and the Unification of Italy. A statue of the tribune by Girolamo Masini (1840 - 1885) was erected at the foot of Rome's Capitoline Hill in 1877.  |

He was one of the most important artists of Mannerism. Mercury, sculpted in 1545-53, is an example of a mythological sculpture which demonstrates the technique of bronze. Mercury is a major Roman god, He was considered the son of Maia and Jupiter in Roman mythology.  |

Belgium Edouard Anseele Fund semipostal June 21, 1948 Edouard Anseele (1856 - 1938) was a Belgian socialist politician and a founding member of the Belgian Workers Party. The Edouard Anseele Monument, sculpted by Jozef Cantré (1890 - 1957), stands in the city of Gent. The five meter high Balmoral Red granite statue portrays the protection of people.  |

The Shaheed Smarak (aka the Martyr's Memorial, Patna), established in 1947, is a life-size bronze statue of seven brave young men who sacrificed their lives in the Quit India Movement (August 1942) to hoist the national flag on the (now) Secretariat building. Here is an image of a stamp depicting the statue, printed by photogravure, and issued by India on October 1, 1967 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of this event, plus a photo of the statue, which was sculpted by Indian artist Devi Prasad Roy Chowdhury (1899-1975). - nethryk  |
