Mexico Philatelic Exhibition Tulsa May 17, 1939 The Pioneer Woman monument is a bronze sculpture in Ponca City, Oklahoma. It was designed by Bryant Baker and dedicated on April 22, 1930. The statue is of a sunbonneted woman leading a child by the hand. The statue was donated to the State of Oklahoma by millionaire oilman E. W. Marland. According to its dedicatory plaque, Pioneer Woman was created "in appreciation of the heroic character of the women who braved the dangers and endured the hardships incident to the daily life of the pioneer and homesteader in this country."  |

United States Newspaper Periodicals stamp July 1, 1885 The Statue of Freedom, originally named Freedom Triumphant in War and Peace, is a bronze statue designed by Thomas Crawford (1814–1857) that, since 1863, has crowned the dome of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The statue depicts a female figure wearing a military helmet and holding a sheathed sword in her right hand and a laurel wreath and shield in her left.  |

United States 75th Anniversary of the Thirteenth Amendment October 20, 1940 The design reproduces the bronze sculpture by Thomas Ball (1819 - 1911), paid by voluntary subscriptions from emancipated slaves, which depicts Lincoln presenting the Emancipation Proclamation to a black man. The statue stands in Lincoln Park in the District of Columbia.  |

El Salvador 400th Anniversary of the Discovery of America July 1, 1893 One of the three commemorative stamps features the Monument to Christopher Columbus in Genoa by Lorenzo Bartolini (1777 – 1850). Christopher Columbus (1451 - 1506) was born in Genoa. He completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean under the auspices of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain. During his first voyage in 1492, Columbus reached the New World, landing on an island in the Bahamas archipelago that he named "San Salvador". Over the course of three more voyages, Columbus visited the Greater and Lesser Antilles, as well as the Caribbean coast of Venezuela and Central America.  |

Honduras Tourism - Maya Ruins March 1, 1978 The stamp features Pauahtun Head in the Maya Site of Copán (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). This and a companion head represent the largest sculpted figures found in Copán. The ruined citadel and imposing public squares reveal the three main stages of development between 427 A.D. and the early 10th century.  |

Sweden EUROPA - Picasso statue in Kristinehamn April 29, 1974 The Picasso sculpture (Picassoskulpturen) is located on Lake Vanern near Kristinehamn, Sweden. This 15 m high Statue is a portrait of Picasso's wife, Jacqueline. It was designed by Pablo Picasso and built by Norwegian artist Carl Nejsar in 1965. Its steel frame was filled with small stones and concrete, and the exterior patterns were created using sand blasting technique.  |

Iceland New York World's Fair April 3, 1939 One of the four designs features a bronze statue of Thorfinn Karlsefni. Thorfinn Karlsefni (980 - 1030?) was an Icelandic explorer. He was the first European to attempt to establish a settlement on the American mainland around 1010 A.D. The statue, as one of a series of sculptures emblematic of the history of America, was installed at Boat House Row, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania unveiled on November 20, 1920.  |

United States Liberty November 11, 1922 The Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The copper statue was a gift to the United States from the people of France. It was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834 - 1904), built by Gustave Eiffel (1832 - 1923), and dedicated on October 28, 1886. The statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata with inscription of July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue is an icon of the United States and has welcomed soldiers home and greeted new immigrants since 1886.  |

United States Kosciuszko Issue October 13, 1933 The stamp commemorates the 150th anniversary Kosciusko's naturalization as an American citizen. The design shows the statue of the uniformed general that sits in Lafayette Park in the District of Columbia. General Tadeusz Kosciuszko (1746 - 1817) was a Polish military engineer and a military leader. He moved to North America and took part in the American Revolutionary War as a colonel in the Continental Army. He served under George Washington and fought in several key battles. He is best known for his engineering of the fortifications at West Point between 1778 and 1780. In 1783, the Continental Congress promoted him to brigadier general in recognition of his services.  |

United States Tercentenary of Rhode Island May 4, 1936 The stamp depicts the statue of Roger Williams that stands in the city of Providence near the State House. Roger Williams (1603 - 1683) led a group of followers out of Massachusetts, seeking a place where religious tolerance and free thought could flourish. He began the colony of Providence Plantation near Narragansett Bay in 1636. This was the nucleus of what became the territory and later the state of Rhode Island.  |

Malta Independence Monument December 9, 1991 The Independence Monument was erected at the entrance to Il-Mall at Floriana in 1989 in honor of the 25th anniversary of the independence of Malta. The monument was designed by sculptor Gianni Bonnici (1932 - ). The monument depicts Malta in the form of a female rising above sea waves who with one hand throwing off the shackles and raises his other hand over a national flag.  |

France Resistance Monuments - The Île de Sein Monument April 9, 1962 The Île de Sein is a French island in the Atlantic Ocean, off the western tip of the continent of Europe. The monument honors the 114 (or 128) male inhabitants aged between 14 and 54 (or 60) who, upon hearing General Charles de Gaulle's call to resistance during World War II, set sail in their fishing boats for Britain to join the Free French forces in June 1940.  |

Mexico New York World Fair - Statue of Morelos May 2, 1939 A 40-meter statue of José María Morelos, a great hero of Mexico's independence, is located on the island of Janitzio in Lake Pátzcuaro in the state of Michoacán. A spiral staircase leads to the top, and a balcony offering a panoramic view of the lake is in the cuff of his sleeve.  |

Guatemala Fray Bartolome de Las Casas - Defender of the Indians October 8, 1949 Bartolomé de las Casas (1484 - 1566) was a 16th-century Spanish historian, social reformer and Dominican friar. He became the first resident Bishop of Chiapas, and the first officially appointed Protector of the Indians. He spent 50 years of his life actively fighting slavery and the violent colonial abuse of indigenous peoples, especially by trying to convince the Spanish court to adopt a more humane policy of colonization. The stamp features his statue in the atrium of the Santo Domingo Church in Guatemala City.  |
