Brazil The 90th Anniversary of the Birth of Victor Brecheret February 22, 1984 Victor Brecheret (1894 - 1955) was an Italian-Brazilian sculptor. His work combines techniques of European modernist sculpture with references to his native country through the physical characteristics of his human forms and visual motifs drawn from Brazilian folk art. The souvenir sheet features his best known work The Monument to the Bandeirantes. The massive granite sculpture pays tribute to the bandeirantes (those who follow the flags), the explorers who helped create São Paulo and its culture. The monument depicts Portuguese settlers alongside black and indigenous men (and some women) working together to pull a canoe, a familiar scene in their river expeditions. |
