South Korea 5000 Years of Korean Art April 1, 1979 The gilt-bronze pensive Maitreya statue (National Treasure No. 83) is the work of the Silla Kingdom in the early 7th Century. The statue is made of bronze and was at one point plated in gold. It is 93.5 cm tall and is incredibly valuable because few large bronzes survived from that period. The statue is widely acknowledged to be one of the finest Buddhist sculptures ever produced and is a masterpiece of Korean art.  |

France National Museum August 20, 1937 The Winged Victory of Samothrace, also called the Nike of Samothrace, is a sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike (Victory). The Parian marble statue was sculped by Pythokritos of Lindos during ca. 200 – 190 B.C. Despite its significant damage and incompleteness, the Victory is held to be one of the great surviving masterpieces of sculpture from the Hellenistic Period, and from the entire Greco-Roman era.  |

DDR (Germany) Art From The State Museums, Berlin April 19, 1983 Athena from the Library of Pergamon is a Hellenistic marble copy ( ca. 200 - 150 B.C.) of the 5th century B.C. colossal gold and ivory Athena Parthenos statue by the Greek sculptor Pheidias, which stood in the Athenian Parthenon. The marble statue was found in the Library of Pergamon in Pergamon, Turkey and is now in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.  |

Greece 50th Anniversary of the United Nations June 21, 1995 The statue of Eirene and Ploutos was a bronze statue by Cephisodotus the Elder, at ca. 375 - 371 B.C., which stood on the Agora in Athens. Marble copies of the statue were made by the Romans. The statue depicts Eirene (or Irene), the Goddess of Peace and the season of Spring, holding the infant Ploutos, the god of plenty and son of Demeter. The statue is an allegory for peace and prosperity.  |

Greece Olympic Games 1972 - Munich July 28, 1972 Spartan Female Athlete is a Greek bronze statuette of a running girl. It is 11.4 cm high and dates to about 500 B.C. The girl is dressed exactly as Pausanias describes the girls in the running events at Olympia. The Spartans encouraged women to take part in sports because they believed that mothers who were tough and strong would produce good Spartan soldiers.  |

Greece Ancient Art Series I January 15, 1954 Moschophoros (Calf-Bearer) is an ancient Greek statue found in the Perserschutt in the Acropolis of Athens. The 1.65-m marble statue, dated ca. 560 B.C., is currently housed in the Acropolis Museum in Athens. The statue was a votive offering to the goddess Athena dedicated by Rhonbos, son of Palos.  |

Spain 400th Anniversary of the Passing of Alonso Berruguete July 9, 1962 Alonso González de Berruguete (c. 1488 – 1561) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and architect. He is considered to be the most important sculptor of the Spanish Renaissance, and is known for his emotive sculptures depicting religious ecstasy or torment. One of the stamps in this commemorative set shows his wood carving Martirio de San Sebastian (1526).  |
