5000 Years of Korean Art
April 1, 1979
The gilt-bronze pensive Maitreya statue (National Treasure No. 83) is the work of the Silla Kingdom in the early 7th Century. The statue is made of bronze and was at one point plated in gold. It is 93.5 cm tall and is incredibly valuable because few large bronzes survived from that period. The statue is widely acknowledged to be one of the finest Buddhist sculptures ever produced and is a masterpiece of Korean art.
