National Monuments - Battle of Gironico
March 20, 1940
The Battle of Giornico took place on December 28, 1478, at which the Swiss Confederacy troops defeated the Milanese army. The Swiss soldiers rolled large boulders from the hill to attack the Milanese in a narrow valley.
The Battle of Giornico is honored with a monument of Ticino sculptor Apollonio Pessina and found at the northern entrance of the village. It features a Swiss soldier moving a large boulder.

The 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Reinhold Begas
July 16, 1981
Reinhold Begas (1831 - 1911) was a German sculptor who dominated Prussian sculpture for a generation after 1870. His work is mainly on mythological and decorative subjects and has a strong Baroque influence.
The stamp design chose his marble sculpture Amor und Psyche (1854 - 1857) at The Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.

June 10, 1955
Het zotte geweld (1912) is a sculpture by Rik Wouters (1882 - 1916) which shows ecstatic movement of a female dancer. The bronze statue is at Middelheim Open Air Sculpture Museum, Antwerp.

The design features The Mason (1897) by the Belgian artist and sculptor George Minne (1866 - 1941). The marble sculpture is at Musée d'Orsay, Paris. A wood reproduction of the statue is at Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent.

Erasmus University Rotterdam is a public university named after Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus (1466 - 1536), a 15th-century humanist and theologian. Dutch sculptor Hendrick de Keyser (1565 - 1621) created the bronze statue of Erasmus in the campus.

One of the three commemorative stamps shows a part of Hermes and the Infant Dionysus , an ancient Greek marble sculpture by Praxiteles of Athens (ca. 390-332 B.C.).
Hermes was the messenger god of the ancient Greece. He was a pathfinder to unknown places and was ready to help others.

Gheorghe Leonida (1892 - 1942) was a Romanian sculptor known for creating the head of Christ the Redeemer, the statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The joint issue features his bronze sculpture Eva located in the courtyard of the National Museum of Art of Romania in Bucharest.

500th Anniversary of the Death of Ivan Duknoviæ

Ivan Duknoviæ (1440 - 1509) was a sculptor from Trogir, Dalmatia who was mainly active in Rome, Hungary and in Dalmatia. He was one of the leading sculptors in Rome in the second half of the 15th century.
The commemorative stamp features his statue St. John the Evangelist in the Cathedral of St. Lawrence in Trogir. The XIII Century cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
