The first question is: what do you want from your album? For me, it is really important that I be able to easily customize my album.
I like the Scott National three ring binder with metal hinges.

I've found that while the cloth hinges last much better than the plastic hinges that H. E. Harris uses, they still loosen up with active use.
I've appreciate that the three ring system allows both for the album to lay flat, even at the beginning and end of the album:

And, it also allows me to add or move pages with great ease. So, when I got interested in private perforations, it was very easy to add pages in the middle of the album:

I don't like the hinge-less albums, as they assume that I only acquire singles of a specified size. Whereas, sometimes I prefer a pair, or strip of several stamps:

or a larger single:

Those are not cut envelopes, those are the margins on Scott #754 and Scott # 755!
I also prefer the black background of the show-guard mounts. They display the perfs nicely.
And finally, the national album has been in production long enough that I can easily find odd pages that I can re-purpose. Here I took a coil pair page, and use it for imperforate pairs:

It also allowed me to display my proof stamps next to my regular issues:
