Hi,
I was looking at this stamps, thought that the number " 1900 " was an overprint. But looking at the stamp, I don't see the country name. It just reads:

Instruccion Centimos 25.
Can anyone identify this stamp or if it really not a stamp at all, and if the 1900 on it is an overprint?

Thank you,
SueStamps

Hi SueStamps

Definitely a Venezuela school tax revenue. These stamps are called Escuellas, Schools.

Scott only lists those that were authorized for regular postage. Michel, Stanley Gibbons and Minkus catalogs list these issues. This particular one is:

Minkus 25c plum R106
Michel 25c brown-violet 74 (back of Venezuela section)
SG 25c plum 208

This stamp is mnimum value.

Hi Sue Stamps,I recently acquired the same instruccion 25 centimos with 1900 overprinted as well as a 5,10 & 25 centimos without 1900 overprinted on them. They were amongst some spanish stamps so I thought maybe spain.Thankyou for enlightening me.I collect mainly predecimal Australian stamps and old stamps from other countries when I can,ie germany pre 1945,pre1925 canadian and a few other countries.Kind Regards James from Downunder where everything is not upside down.

There is a interesting story about these stamps ,I have posted about them before on this chat board . They original were intended as internal postage stamps with funds going to build schools . Then used as payment for postal employees salaries.
The lack of success in both ,they were sold to exporters who shipped them off to stamp packet makers in Europe .That's why there are millions floating around the hobby .

Stuck On You: welcome to the Forum

There are some other varieties, using different inscriptions, but using the same portrait, which is of Simon Bolivar. Good hint that origin is Venezuela.

Here's my only copy with this overprint. I had thought it must be School Tax, since the underlying stamp appears to be Scott #131 from 1893,and Venezuela only began using this overprint in 1900, by which time all Escuelas stamps were no longer valid for postage. Glad to know that School Tax is correct.
