For several years I've liked using The Postal Service Guide to US Stamps as an alternate to the Scott Catalog. I use both but like having a choice available.

Scott numbers are used and Scott catalog prices are listed.

Here's a link to what this book looks like:

I like that the book is spiral-bound so it lays flat when you're using it. Pictures of stamps are grouped on one side so that you don't have to leaf through pages and pages of stamps to find the one you're looking for. Back of Book items are included as well. It weighs about half of what the Scott Specialized catalog does.

Older editions can be found on ebay and Amazon. My most current edition came from Amazon as an ex-library copy.

I, too, use both the Postal Service Guide to US Stamps and an older Scott US Specialized Catalog. The catalog values are consistent between the two sources and up-to-date photos of the latest stamps in the Postal Service Guide is very helpful. Unfortunately, the Postal Service Guide is not as detailed, and therefore a number of varieties are not listed. The Postal Service Guide is also weak in the postal stationery sections, as while the listings may be there, illustrations are severely lacking making it necessary to go back to the Scott catalog for the required detail.

I also get confused by the Postal Service Guide just listing itself as "37th edition", etc., with no printed date, which makes it difficult to know what year's edition you are looking at.

For a $20 pricetag, the Postal Service Guide can't be beat, though. Anyone know when the next edition of the Postal Service Guide will be coming out? Do I assume it is in line with when the new Scott Stamp Catalogs are published (maybe September/October 2011)?
