Yes, these were issued for the area of Eastern Karelia when under Finnish occupation. In the Scott catalog, Karelia #N1-N7(1941). The overprints are in black. Another set was issued with the overprints in green (Karelia #N8-N15). A very nice set to have, one that I am pretty sure is missing from my Finland collection. If you need FACIT catalog numbers, let me know. k |

Quote: Is this semi-post issue? No, for regular postage issue. There was one occupation semipostal issued in 1943, but that stamp does NOT have an overprint -- it was designed specifically for use in Karelia. |

Quote: There was one occupation semipostal issued in 1943 NB1 in Scott...it revisits the famous "golfing bear" from 1922. |

Quote: it revisits the famous "golfing bear" from 1922. It appears that by 1943, he looks much angrier. I guess grumpy old men applies to bear, too. |

I might add that most catalogs (not sure about Scott) recognize two subtypes with (only the small sized stamps of) black overprints... The 2nd "A" in "KARJALA" can have either sharp or flat top piece. As a rule of thumb, a sharp tip doubles the catalog value. |

You are correct, Scott does not differentiate between overprint font types for this issue. The Facit catalog does. |

SG lists them as SG 1I-5I for stamps with the second A of KARJALA having a flat top and SG 1II-5II for those with the pointed top. The pointed A occurs on a third of these stamps. |
