Hello, Will someone please give me a Scott number for this stamp and what it was used for? The top reads Zegejregt which according to askphil was an inscription used on revenue stamps in Transvaal in 1895.The denomination is 10 shillings.
Many thanks
David

The denomination looks to be 10 shillings. There's a 6p rose version of this design with a Postzegel (?) overprint, and Scott's mentions counterfeit overprints on "other revenue denominations"
Only the 6p is listed for postal usage, so I would deduce that this is a revenue stamp from around 1895. Sorry there's no more listed about it, that I can see anyway.

I think this might be from the 1888 series, in which case it would be Forbin #45. It came in three perf varieties, perf 14 having the highest catalogue value (slightly higher...in 1915) of the three.

Scott doesn't list the revenue stamps that (it believes) were not authorized for postal use.

This is the 10/- value from the 1901 set which has a black V.R.I. overprint (although it's not very clear on this stamp). This version is only listed as having perf 11-11½ and is Barefoot #74.

Good eye on the Victoria overprint, nigel. I was thinking it was a rather late use of the 1888 series.

Forbin lists this as 1900, Forbin #58. There is merely a reference in the heading to perfs 11-14 (as opposed to the 1888 series, which listed three different perf possibilities).

I'm sure Barefoot put the intervening 90 years to good use, and I'd go with their information.

J Barefoot Ltd http://www.jbarefoot.co.uk/ is a publisher of a number of things, most famously of various revenue stamp catalogues for many countries worldwide. (They also published the small handbook for Latvian map stamps, which are being discussed right now in another thread.)
