The historic lighthouse on Sombrero Island, Anguilla, which had been heavily damaged by Hurricane Donna in 1960, was replaced in 1962 by a 28 m (92 ft) square pyramidal skeletal tower with square central cylinder, mounted on a concrete base. Here is an image of a stamp depicting the new lighthouse (which was itself replaced in 2001), printed by photogravure, and issued for use in the British colony of St. Kitts, Nevis & Anguilla on November 20, 1963, Scott No. 145. - nethryk |

Fenerbahçe Lighthouse was built in 1857 and is still in use. It is located on Cape Fenerbahçe close to the eastern side of the Bosporus entrance on the northern coast of the Sea of Marmara, Istanbul, Turkey. The lighthouse's lantern has a 1,000 W light source. The light flashes twice in group white through a catadioptric reflector system with cylindrical lens having a focus length of 500 mm (20 in) every 12 seconds 1.5 seconds long, which is visible at a range of 15 mi (24 km). The lighthouse's foghorn blasts every 60 seconds in foggy conditions. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a view of Fenerbahçe Lighthouse and the adjoining park, engraved and printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., Ltd., and issued by Turkey (Ottoman Empire) on January 14, 1914, Scott No. 258, plus a recent photograph of the lighthouse with the keeper's house in the foreground. - nethryk |

Vinga Lighthouse, built in 1890, is a 29 meter tall square porphyry tower with a cylindrical lantern. It is located on Vinga island, off the west coast of Sweden. The light is still active, with a focal height of 46 meters. Here is an image of a booklet stamp depicting Vinga Lighthouse, designed after a photograph by Lars Söderbom, engraved by Zlatko Jakus, and issued by Sweden on June 7, 1974, Scott No. 1088, Facit No. 875, plus a photograph of the lighthouse. Note: Nearby the lighthouse are the original 1841 cylindrical lighthouse (painted red and gray, and which now serves as a watchtower), and a distinctive red pyramid day beacon, built in 1857. - nethryk |

Seems like lighthouses are a popular subject on stamps. As you can see in some earlier posts, NZ has featured these on some of the Govt Life issues. Below are a couple of recent additions. Don't know if it will show up well here but the .50c has the beam of light overprinted with a shiny coating which makes it glisten in the.....well, light. |
