FIUME

A seaport and territory on the Adriatic Sea formerly belonging to Hungary and occupied
by the Allies in 1918/19.

Between 1919 and 1924 the territory was a Free State, controlled by D'Annunzio and his
legionaries, until annexation to Italy in 1924.

For later issues see Fiume and Kupa Zone; Venezia Giulia.
Ceded to Yugoslavia in 1947 and now known as Rijeka.

1918. 100 filler = 1 krone.
1919. 100 centesimi = 1 corona.
1920. 100 centesimi = 1 lira.

1919

Litho

(Any suggestions re the Icon of the lass and the lion, welcomed)

Excellent thread.

I have shown this in the Austria-Hungary postmark section, but it also belongs with Fiume.

Nice additions not seen those prior.
I don't think Liberty is quite ugly,
but she does remind me of "wonder woman"
(sorry poor childhood habits no doubt)

Bee, what does the "NM" signify in the postmark?
(time of day perhaps? AM / PM ?)

The second only postmark in my stamp collection
that has experienced "conurbation"
Methinks a very low example thematic.

Rijeka Now Croatia

I just got a few nice used Fiume from ebay. Here is one with a "Poste Militare" cancel. The date appears to be 2.4.19 (Feb 4 or Apr 2 ?) and is that a "33" at the bottom of the postmark?

Here are a couple more Fiume, the Special Delivery issues from 1920:

The woman and lion are sometimes listed as "Garibaldi statue" but Italy is littered with Garibaldi statues, begging the question, "which one?" I believe Verona's has a woman and a lion as a part of the base, but I don't know if that is the inspiration for this vignette.

1920 1 lira black "Gabriele d'Annunzio"
1921 10c carmine overprinted "Governo Provvisorio"

The territory of Fiume after WWI was disputed between the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs,Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia), and the Kingdom of Italy. With the situation in flux, the ultra-nationalist Italian Poet Gabriele d'Annunzio led the seizure of the city with 2,000 Italian nationalist irregulars on September 12, 1919.

D'Annunzio and his followers wanted Italy to annex Fiume, but Italy refused. In fact, Italy demanded that the interlopers surrender. Subsequently, the Treaty of Rapallo was signed November 12,1920 between the Kingdom of Italy and the Kingdom of Serbs,Croats and Slovenes, which, among other things, set up the Free State of Fiume. This ended the military occupation of d'Annunzio and his troops.

The first stamp represents the 14 stamp d'Annunzio issue of 1920, with the Italian Poet featured; the second stamp shows the reversal of fortune for d'Annunzio,as the stamp issue were overprinted for the new provisional government.

On second thought, the Garibaldi statue that gives inspiration to the vignette may be in Turin/Torino...I couldn't find reference to a likely example in Fiume, but that could be due to a deficiency in my Google searches.
