The last detail re accuracy is a key I think. In my opinion it would be safe to say it is a semi scale drawing and not an accurate representation of an actual aircraft. I'm in the process of preparing a 16 page exhibit featuring the DC3, a fascinating study of a wonderful workhorse used in so many different roles. Still have a couple of them flying around the country here in NZ.

teals:

Thanks for the added effort. I agree, the semi-scale drawing is the best explanation. Would really like to see your DC-3 exhibit when it's finished. The DC-3 is one of the greatest performing aircraft of its time period. There are still some on the U.S. aircraft registry as well.

nethryk;

Very nicely executed stamps! The designer and engraver show close attention to detail. The Swedes know how to print stamps!

DonSellos - Agreed. Also, Sweden is one of only a handful of countries still regularly issuing intaglio engraved stamps.

Rescue helicopter, definitive stamp designed by Beat Knoblauch and Paul Beer, engraved by Manfred Spiegel, and issued by Germany on August 14, 1975, Scott No. 1173, Michel No. 849.

Some stamps I have recently acquired. Interested to know if there is any significance or value in the 20c (outlined in yellow) as they are of different colour one having the green shading extending all the way to the perforations. Have a number of these stamps but this is the only one like this. Can anyone inform me regarding this colour variation? Allen

The Nieuport 28 (N.28C-1) was a World War I French biplane fighter aircraft designed by Gustave Delage and built by Nieuport. After the war, Nieuport 28s were used for many military and civilian purposes. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a Nieuport 28 and a flight map of Buenos Aires Province, designed by Argentine artist Eduardo Miliavaca, printed by lithography, and issued by Argentina on September 13, 1969 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first Argentine airmail service from El Palomar to Mar del Plata, flown by Captain Pedro Leandro Zanni (1891-1942), February 23-24, 1919, plus photographs of Captain Zanni and of a Nieuport 28.

Great Swiss stamp, nice centering and cancel! I also though the real photos of the Capt. Zanni and the Nieuport were very interesting as well.

Allen:

I don't know enough about the frequency or causes of color variations to comment authoritatively, but the ones you show have good contrast. I usually mount stamps that show difference like these side by side in my album, or if there are enough examples, on a special page. They add welcome variety to the presentation of a stamp series, in my opinion.

Thanks for the comments Don. Yes, I also have included them in the album side-by-side to highlight variation. A couple more US stamps added to my collection yesterday. Nice to have both variations of the 15c stamp.

DonSellos - Thanks! Here is another Switzerland stamp which you might also enjoy.

The Häfeli DH-3 was an 1910s Swiss two-seat reconnaissance biplane aircraft, built by the Federal Construction Works at Thun, Switzerland. Here is an image of an airmail stamp depicting a Häfeli DH-3 in flight, designed by Swiss artist Otto Baumberger (1889-1961), printed by photogravure (Courvoisier, S.A.), and issued by Switzerland on September 1, 1944 as one of a set of three stamps commemorating the 25th anniversary of the country's first regular air route, Scott No. C37, plus a photograph of a Häfeli DH-3.

Thanks, Nethryk. The Swiss stamp is a nice one too. Great detail, which makes for a realistic looking airplane, and a nice cancel too.

Happy Birthday to Jorge Newbery (1875-1914), an Argentine aviator and engineer who in 1914 broke the world altitude record reaching 6,225m in a Morane-Saulnier monoplane; later that year he was killed in a plane crash. Here is an image of a stamp depicting Newbery in the cockpit of his plane, c. 1912–1914, printed by photogravure, and issued by Argentina on February 23, 1964 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Jorge Newbery's death, Scott No. 759, plus an image of the photo based upon which this stamp was designed.

I've enjoyed perusing this thread. My collections focus on US air post and aviation themed regulars. The US Scott #649-650 were posted earlier in the thread; here they are, with some US air mails, on an early Lindbergh cover:

And for something new:

An image of US #3783 was previously posted. Here are a couple of covers with earlier FDC cancellations:

Anything to make something unique!
