I'm not a big fan of filler stamps, but I'd rather have a rough original than one of those ^%$#@! "facsimile" stamps peddled on ebay.

I have heard of a statue that is quite pricey and the female subject has had her arms knocked off!!
Sometimes damage adds to the charm.

Makes me feel better about some of the heavy cancelled and poorly centered stamp I offer at times. There is a market for these stamp when fine items are so expensive. But there is a limit!

Well I agree with khj. Even though the stamp is in poor condition , if I had the chance to own ,I would buy it as well( for the right price). I do have a couple of stamps in my collection that are damaged but not as severely as this one and I am proud to own them.

I'm horrified. I've just spend days taking stamps off paper and I'd have thrown out many stamps in much better condition than this!

You can always use very damaged stamps in art - collages, crafts and the like. I recently came across one of those Chinese postcards with an acrobat on front that is made up of parts of cut up stamps - I haven't scanned it yet. The APS recently had an article on them as well. I have a friend who collects postal stationery and he gives his wife his "damaged" postal cards to be used as part of art multi-media/paintings. I've made Christmas cards in the past by assembling used U.S. Christmas stamps in the form of a tree with an angel on top cut out from the 1975 Christmas stamp.

Ahh, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I paid over $300 for the torn up mess below. Why? (1) The stamp catalogs $8,000 so buying a sound one would be pricey, to say the least; (2) unlike many that are faked, this one is unquestionably genuine; and most importantly (3) it is the only example I have ever seen with a red handstamped cancel, so it fits perfectly into my collecting focus.

Then there are certain areas like proprietary match & medicine stamps, where if you decide to participate, you inevitably *WILL* be collecting damaged stamps, as the majority are only found that way (and Scott states that pricing for the entire section is for stamps with faults).

A blank space is surely preferable to putting scrap paper in the album, or is this not the perception of the community?

I never buy spacefillers. Certainly, I've come across some here and there, as a part of a lot, that I might use for that purpose, but I have never spent money specifically just to fill an empty hole. I'd rather save the money and keep the hole empty until I can fill it properly.
