On August 8, 2013 the USA issued a "Building the Nation" pane of 12 different, "forever" (first class domestic letter rate) stamps using black and white images of Americans at work, mostly taken by photographer and sociologist Lewis W. Hine (1874-1940). There are 5 different varieties of the pane, each having the same stamps in the same positions, but having a different black and white image as the selvage. One of these stamps(Sc #4801j) shows a detail of Lewis Hine's Trackwalker Jo (1920), a pipe-smoking trackwalker for the Pennsylvania RailRoad. There are several, slightly different varieties/poses of this photograph...but not the stamp. |

Here is one of the four, 1st class domestic rate designs from Finland's March 15, 2000 one-pane, Moomim IV booklet. Stamp (Facit #1523) depicts Swedish-speaking, Finnish cartoonist Tove Jansson's character Snusmumriken (Eng.: Snufkin). Snufkin is the one wearing the big hat and smoking the pipe. From Moominland.fandom.com, "He lives in a tent, smokes a pipe, and plays the harmonica, although he is shown to play the flute as well. Snufkin also has a great dislike for authority figures such as the Park Keeper, and the many regulation signs and fences he puts up, and as such is often thought of as an anarchist." |

This 42c stamp (Sc #1452) of Canada is from the November 13, 1992 Christmas set of four values. Canada Post used a different designer for the central panel of each of the four values. Canadian illustrator Anita Kunz (b.1956) designed this interestingly stylized 42c value showing a pipe-smoking Santa. Note the tiny pipe and small forelegs of the horse. Kunz often satirizes great/notable works of art. |

Not easy finding images of smokers on stamps. I was checking Austrian stamps since they have dozens and dozens of famous/important personalities on stamps but found only one with a stogie hanging out of his mouth. Austria Scott 1072 Egon Friedell (1878-1938) Writer and historian |
