I 1st replied to this topic 2 years ago so I guess an update is OK.

In addition to collecting stamps, I
I still Play golf (18 handicap)
I no longer Ride motorcycles (still have the bike)
I still Archery Hunt, deer & others (got a nice Bear last year)
I still Gun Hunt, deer & others (no luck so far this year)
I still Fish
I no longer Camp out
I still Read
I still Travel (Atlanta to Philly every week)
I still Work 10+ hr days

I just had my 4th stent implant and will continue doing what I enjoy the most, just need to figure out what that is. So, I guess I'm still doing OK at 66.

You meant "stent implanted". Thanks, you made the frenchie from up the border learn two words. Stint and stent. It's good to be active as much as the body can take it. For sure you don't get bored by life. Myself i'm 52 and my other hobby is poetry. I write once in a while and I am member of a poetry website. But it's stamp collecting that keep me the most busy. Also there is nothing like coming back from work and drink beer listening to all kind of music in the basement.

Art,
Don't give up on the bike yet. What kind do you have? I have a 32 year old Goldwing Aspencade with 108,000 miles and 17 trips on her to Sturgis, (not doing that any more, but I still have to ride.) I don't plan to ever get rid of it. At this point it's not worth much and it is not likely I will buy another one. (However I have always wanted a decked out BMW)

A few years back I did a by no means scientific study, using the Membership Report in the American Philatelist (APS member magazine),just to see what the average age was for those joining the APS. I don't remember the exact age but it was in the mid-60s. Wouldn't say thats exactly representative of the entire hobby, but it was an interesting exercise. I'm 67 and been collecting since I was 13--with several mid-life years hiatus dealing with raising kids and working 75-80 hour work weeks.

If you belong to the American Philatelic Society you get their monthly magazine. In the back they always have a section where they list new members. In the listings they include the ages of the new members. I'm currently 63 (I joined when I was 25) and every once in a while I look at the listings and keep a running tab to see if I'm older or younger than most of the new members. Incredibly, at 63, I'm still younger than most of the new members…but not a whole lot. So I would say that 63 is about the median age for new APS members. I realize however that lots of collectors are not APS members, but with 30K+ members, it ought to be representative.
