I was putting some Eritrea stamps in the album this morning, and the first three 1934 Air Post stamps had the not unusual desert scene with camel and airplane...

But the next three in the series.....

...has a fuselage depicted that would make Flash Gordon proud heading for, I'm speculating here, the Moon (Clavius base?). And driven by...er...three propellers.

I'm of course kidding, but an interesting depiction nevertheless.

Here are some more Eritrea...

These are actually 1906-07 surcharged Somalian stamps with bars over the original values and overprinted for Eritrea...A 2c on 1b brown and a 25c on 2 1/2a blue. The Eritrea overprints are in blue or red; so that makes these the 1924 issue. The original overprinted 1922 Eritrea issue was in black. Aren't these outstanding images of the Elephant and Lion? What great looking stamps!

These stamps are from the 1930 issue..

The 15c dark green & black depicts a Lineman. Looks a bit dangerous...No? The 35c red brown & black shows a Lancer. These stamps were printed by lithography, and at least the 35c vignette image appears to me to be somewhat muddy.

I haven't had a lot of particular familiarity with these stamp issues, being a worldwide classical era collector, but the Italian colonies stamp designs are beginning to impress.

Wow. The above stamps have two different overprints. One in black and the other in red or blue. I just wonder if there was any real cost advantage to all of those overprints as opposed to just having printed new stamps to begin with. I guess we'll never know.

And here an example again of the 1924 issue with a blue overprint..

The Lion....15c on 2a brown orange

The previous owner of the collection of Eritrea had lumped the 1922 (black overprint) and 1924 (red or blue overprint) together. I did the same thing until I happened upon the fine print in the Scott catalogue and realized my error.

Great looking stamps!
