Way back when I was a boy (1967), I was given this book by my parents. It was one of a series of books covering different topics. The idea was to score points for collecting certain items or viewing certain stamps. At the end you would receive a certificate. Might be a useful tool, even today, for anyone trying to bring a young child in to the hobby.
What reagent is supposed to be in that dropper bottle shown in the accessories picture? Watermarking fluid is the only liquid I can think of for use in philately but have never seen it used one drop at a time. Has anyone her used a dropper bottle like this?
I used to see them for sale everywhere in Britain and I had two or three although I didn't have the stamp one. Once you'd spotted all the things shown you were were supposed to send them to "Big Chef I-Spy" to get the certificate.
The booklet says that the dropper was for benzine (petroleum ether) for watermark detection. This was the advice in all the books I had in the late 1960's when I started collecting.
