I think I have taken on a rather large task. I am attempting to create some sort of order from the postal chaos that seems to have been happening in the Balkan area following WW II.

For now, I have two questions. The first one deal with some Croation Issues that have been overprinted by Jugoslavia. I cannot find these in Scott at all.

The two sets in question are posted below.

I have picked one to show the overprint. It seems standard to all the stamps except for the value.

Are these issues at all recognized and were they intended for use anywhere within the Jugoslav Federation or were they for a specific area?

The second question is about issues for Trieste. I believe this page shows issues for that region.

They are either printed with the region designation or are Jugoslav issues overprinted without obliterating the country name, Jugoslavia.
Examples of each are shown.

Again, were these intended for general use or for use only in Trieste? And can anyone give me a more accurate translation of the name "STT VUJNA" or "S.T.T. V.U.J.A." .

Thank you for any answers you may have.

not an expert on these, but I can give you some basic information.

the first set of overprinted NDH issues were for use only in Croatia. as each of the Slavic states were liberated, they began to overprint the available stamps for the newly formed Democratic Republic of Yugoslavia. (note that these issues were still using the kuna currency) Slovenia, which was using stamps issued by the German occupation forces (under the name Laibach - the German name for Ljubljana), overprinted both the Laibach issues as well as the German Hitler series of stamps. to further split hairs, there are different overprints for different regions within these states (Zagreb and Split have different overprints for Croatia, as well as Ljubljana and Maribor have different overprints for Slovenia).

the second set you have, the Trieste issues, were valid only in the Trieste region. The abbreviation is "Slobodni Teritorij Trsta - Vojna Uprava Jugoslavenske Narodne Armije" or "Free Territory of Trieste - Military Administration of the Yugoslav People's Army" or later, the "People's" was dropped, to make VUJA.

Further to what has been offered,
I suggest you Google for a Mr. "Jay Carrigan"
he has an exceptional collection of Yugoslavia
and a lot of it is on line.
It addresses, I would think, all your stamps.

Is the website below the one you are referring to Rod? It shows many stamps of Yugoslavia by clicking on the 'frames' listed on the left hand side.

There are also a lot of German local post stamps in the collection. Link:

It's a fascinating area and this does look like the site to go to. It has already identified a small handful of overprints that were isolated unknowns in the material I am attacking. Thanks for the link.
