Hi guys Since I do not own a Unitrade catalog (until my birthday on the 19th), I was wondering if Unitrade shows the smudge/flaw/error on the stamp shown below on the dome...!!
Here is Robin's (from Unitrade) reply to me sending him this stamp....This guy is a very patient gentleman, and is very honest...I appreciated his expertise....Below is his reply that I am adding as so all can benefit from his expertise.
"Robert:
I also follow the Stamp Community Forum very closely, watching particularly for new varieties to be reported, and have seen your posting of this item there.
Without seeing the actual stamp, I believe this is a smudge, or scuff of the blue ink. I have seen similar smudging on many stamp issues.
As an EFO (Error, Freak, Oddity), I would place this item in the "oddity" category with no premium to value.
Some kind of harder object has come into contact with the face of the stamp and scuffed the ink, in just the right spot(!) to give this appearance.
I do not see this as "2 cracks", but rather, some blue toning that is found within the crosshatching and extends into the white dome, due to scuffing (caused by an upper right to lower left motion). The smudged area is not the same intensity of colour as the rest of the design (this is quite apparent within the crosshatching as well). In order to be an actual flaw it would need to be the same intensity.
The Unitrade catalogue only lists constant varieties produced during the printing process; this item is not constant. Your item is most likely "unique", but not caused during the printing process.
I'm afraid that if I owned this stamp I would put it in my postage pile.
