I have finally mounted the 1948-52 Women's Costumes acquired over the years. Just 6 more to complete the basic set of 37 in nice used condition (and more batches of Austria are in the mail). I always liked these stamps as a childhood collector. Rod222 called the 3g Tyrol Girl of 1950 "the world's rarest common stamp" in this thread: https://goscf.com/t/7658#7658Of course I do not have it yet... Here are my pages. I decided to sort them by year. I scanned them in their plastic sleeves, that makes for the slight blurry look some places.

Nice work BC.
I also like that set and they are probably some of the first stamps I collected.
I'm basically missing the lowest and highest denomination. |

You are very observant Litho! I accidentally put the 50g there and then removed it and put it in it's proper place. As for the high value block, it was a lucky find in a cheap lot, I previously posted here: https://goscf.com/t/14443#14443 |

Quote: I accidentally put the 50g there and then removed it and put it in it's proper place. I have done exactly the same thing, leaving hinge marks or mounts on the pages. |

I also remember collecting some of these during my childhood. Brings back very fond memories. Lovely collection you have of them. |

I'm a big fan of including blocks, and customizing the pages for them. Very sharp. |

Vienna 1850??? (see Scan 3)
BeeSee, I have loads of these stamps in a bag somewhere. As I don't collect this series, I'll have a look and see if I have any that you don't have yet.
UPDATE: I have the four highest values (90g brownish violet, 1s rose red, 2.70 brown, and 4.50 brownish violet). If you're interested, perhaps we could arrange a swap.

Sigh, whenever I think I have a great page someone comes along with a better one, Nice work BeeSee, I envy your computer drafting skills. Very nice to see a collector who uses "used" stamps, I really dig the cancellations. Is it me? or does anyone else feel all the girls are the same model? Do we have any news on the designer? A nice octagonal pmk that may get Puzzler perspiring. |

Hi, BeeSee. Underneath your block of 4, it seems to say 'Vienna 1850.' (I just realised that on each page there is one caption that reads in a similar manner, e.g., Vienna 1840, Lower Austria 1850.) I'm just wondering what it means.
These days I mainly collect Australian and New Zealand postmarks. Let me know if you have any you'd be willing to swap.
BTW I have 1 90g, 1 of the 1 schilling, 2 of the 2.70, and 8 of the 4.50.

Jimjam, the captions are the regions (and sometimes date) where the costumes come from. I used the Scott translation from the tiny German text in the bottom center of each stamp.
I will check and see what I have in terms of Australian and New Zealand cancels - probably not much - I assume you are looking for circular date cancels. |

Yes the Austrian Costume definitives is a very interesting issue. Some of the values were reissued in 1958/59. Whereas the originals of 1948-52 were printed On Toned Paper, with Glossy Yellowish Gum quoting Scott, the reprints were On White Paper, with Flat White GumThe designs of the 1958/59 reissue usually appear clearer & sharper due to finer photo screening. Here are a few examples with the 1948 issues on the left Scott-------------527------------------------------------------- 527a Scott--------------547--------------------------------------------547a Scott---------------554---------------------------------------------554a
Scott--------------555-----------------------------------------------555a Most of the values also have an S in the design usually bottom right or left for the designer Josef Seger. Edit: I'm trying to get the Scott numbers directly over the proper stamp but it is not working |
