Hi Black_jack, I find the Bangladesh 1st-3rd series definitives most interesting, had not seen them before . I love definitive sets which show the culture, flora & fauna, crops & industries, landmarks of the country, & these sets show all of that! Its great that you show the overprints & gutter pairs too. I see that you collect Pakistan, maybe you could show Pakistan defs too ( the older ones) |

Here's a partial set from San Marino's 1929-1935 definitive series. These finely-engraved stamps depict La Rocca (The Rock), San Marino's state prison. Other stamps in the series depict the Government Palace and the Statue of Liberty (San Marino's, not U.S.'s). Regards, Robert Edit: Re-uploaded image. |

Quote: Why are they called the Scroll issues? There were three series of stamps that used the same center portrait of King George V with the same colours. I believe they are described by how the country name CANADA appears. The Scroll issue has what looks like a scroll unrolled across the top with CANADA in it. The Arch (sometimes called the Leaf issue) has a arch with CANADA in it while also flanking the King, with a maple leaf in each upper corner sprouting from the supporting arch (kind of heraldic). The Pictorial issue has a round-ended bar with CANADA in it atop an oval portrait frame around the King, looking somewhat how pictures were displayed in portrait frames at the time. |

This cover was issued on 6th February 2012, but this is the Diamond Jubilee weekend in the UK: Diamond Jubilee Definitive Stamps: Left to right, these stamps commemorate: 1. The design of the Wilding definitives, first issued in 1952 2. Banknote portrait design by Robert Austin (for notes issued from 1960) 3. Banknote portrait design by Harry Eccleston (for notes issued from 1971) 4. Coin effigy by Mary Gillick (circulation from 1953 to 1968) 5. Coin effigy by Arnold Machin 6. Classic definitive portrait by Arnold Machin (Details from the insert of the cover.) |

I find definitives much more exciting, and challenging, than commemoratives. It is hard to find the complete issue in good used condition for many. Mint is often more common than used for some values, and many offer the opportunity for a specialized collection with multiple varieties, shades, printings, etc if wants to travel that road. I am continually amazed at the depth of knowledge that is available on this and some other forums. It makes one want to jump into a "restricted" collection, but that takes time and resources away from the world wide area. Oh so many choices, and oh so hard to choose. |

Just catching up - thanks Puzzler on the explanation of the King George Scroll issue (and others). And I know members have discussed before of what exactly constitutes a "definitive." I guess I would question those previously listed 1953 British Honduros stamps - they really don't look like definitives to me.
That said, I absolutely love this thread. I hope members keep it going. It's very educational and I appreciate all of the info and scans. Thanks. |
