Another Commemorative Definitive issue. Issued in 2007 to celebrate 40 years of the Machin Issue, the sheet shows the current £1 value together with the 'Ruby' coloured new issue. These are flanked on either side by two commemoratives showing [left] Arnold Machin himself and right, the first Machin issue of 1967. Guess you had a bellyful of me now, so I'll mosey on back to work. Londonbus1....might annoy you again later though ! |

Thanks all for posting these wonderful definitives... I think I've yet to complete an entire definitive set. I really have a love/hate relationship with definitives. All the minor variations tween different issues of the same definitive mean lots of fun detective work... but when you can't find that elusive watermark and can't positively identify the stamp, ARG! Then again, it's exciting when you positively identify several variations of the same stamp While we are debating souvenir sheets of definitives, does anyone care to put forth an opinion on whether or not the Hindenburg memorial stamps are commemorative or definitive? These are the Hindenburg definitives overprinted with a black border after his death. |

My favourite souvenir sheet - 1990 150th anniversary of Penny Black. Both stamps shown are arguably not defins. The Penny Black as it was issued at a time before commemeratives were thought of and the Machin 'doublehead' which was issued in 1990 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Penny Black so another Commemorative Definitive |

Good morning. Lb1, what beautiful stamps you have. For the first time I understand the saying in the back of the bus! That is were you find me with my stamp collection....but as everything in life it matters to be part of something, to be on the bus. I defently need a beerstamp for my avatar. Here are the Hindenburg stamps I have, except for the ones in the album which are still to difficult to scan. One of these days. |

Thanks for posting the hindenburg images - I find the black bordered memorial stamps of someone who died while the stamps were in print fascinating. It really ties the stamps back to a specific event in history. Has anyone posted a thread for them? If not, maybe I'll get one going once I dig mine out. |

Wow, who would have thought that these drab, boring, repetitious definitives would get such a response.
Yet after 9 pages we're still debating what defines a definitive.
LB thanks for showing all that stuff especially the Geniality essay. Were they a real security printing company bidding to print GB stamps?
I still believe that any stamp that commemorates anything or anybody cannot be considered a definitive which would include Israel's 50th Jubilee Anniversary issue and items like those Machin Anniversary SS.
Good eye Trainwreck, I only noticed the colour variations but not the different imprints on the 5 Forint Hungarian. Wonder if it's in Scott's catalogue since I don't have the volume for H.
Cjd, that would be a good discussion regarding assigning colours to certain rates as per UPU rules. I suppose they had to get rid of those rules with the advent of multicolor stamps. Or even before?
Stalzer, that Black Jack is a beauty. |

fifia, thanks for posting the Hindenburg memorials issued on Sept 4, 1934 (he died August 2, 1934)
This set and others like it opens up another can of worms.
Does adding a black border to a definitive stamp and calling it a memorial stamp honouring the death of a person change it into a commemorative?
Michel calls them Freimarken mit Trauerrand - Aufdruck (Regular stamps with memorial surcharge) |

Quote: Does adding a black border to a definitive stamp and calling it a memorial stamp honouring the death of a person change it into a commemorative? My two cents: Yes it does. It's a limited (over)printing commemorating a person (or an event, if you will). Regards, Robert |

lithograving, you welcome. I am not that good with an opinion on these stamps. Maybe in a couple of years I can chime in. I am in the learning curve. Here are some from Germany See the 60 and 70 values... same stamp, different value (posted it in the other thread same stamp - different value). The only one in the set. |
