Nells250 - That's a "sweet" one, all right.

Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of British engineer and locomotive pioneer George Stephenson (1781-1848), and depictions of various historical locomotives, designed and engraved by Pierre Forget, and issued by People's Republic of the Congo on December 15, 1974, Scott No. 306. The principal locomotive pictured here appears to be a 20th century 2-10-0 steam freight decapod.

The Napoli-Portici was the first Italian railway line, built by the Bayard Company and opened in 1839. The initial line was double track and ran 7.25 kilometres (4.5 mi). Two 2-2-2 locomotives were imported from Longridge and Co of Bedlington Ironworks, England to handle passenger traffic. Here are images of the two se-tenant stamps depicting the inauguration of the line, designed after a detail from a painting by Italian artist Salvatore Fergola (1799-1874), combined engraved by Antonio Ciaburro and lithography, and issued by Italy on October 3, 1989 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the line, Scott Nos. 1788a, 1787 & 1788, plus an image of Fergola's original 1840 painting.

Frankly, I wouldn't be able to tell one train from another if it (as of course happened to former Colonial Secretary William Huskisson) ran over me.

So if anyone thinks these are wrongly labelled or even upside down, they are probably right:

Row 1 1949 commemorative of the centenary of Yugoslav railways (or at least railways in that territory, since Yugoslavia was only 30 years old)

Row 2 1976 Two trains crossing viaducts to celebrate the opening of the railway line from Beograd to Bar

Row 3 1981 commemorative of the foundation of the Danube Commission. I assume the train represents the Danube / Black Sea Railway

Row 4 1983 commemorative for the 110th anniversary of the Rijeka railway. A ype 401 steam loco and a type 442 electric - the later was never issued unoverprinted.

Row 5 Four definitives showing the same loco, from the inflationary period of the late 80s/early 90s

1984 centenary of the opening of the Beograd to Nis railway. Which is great because that allows me to throw in some real railway philately with a cancel from that line!

A couple of post-breakup stamps:

2012 Croatian stamp showing a SudB 29 loco (still in use until 1976) to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Zidani Most to Sisak via Zagreb line.

2008 Serbian commemorative of 125 years of the Orient Express
