On March 19, 1999 Singapore issued a set of four stamps commemorating the country's maritime heritage. The low value 22c stamp depicts a clipper ship and a tank locomotive. The tank engine was extensively used in ports such as Singapore in the 19th century. It was a very effective means of moving goods from port to warehouse.

From Wikipedia, "A tank locomotive or tank engine is a steam locomotive that carries its water in one or more on-board water tanks, instead of a more traditional tender. The most common type has tanks mounted on either side of the boiler. This type originated about 1840 and quickly became popular for industrial tasks, and later for shunting and shorter mainline duties,"

The water tank shown on both the stamp and the pic is a saddle tank, extended over the length of the boiler

On February 29, 1968 the DDR issued a set of two transport-themed stamps for its annual Leipzig Spring Fair issue. The 10 pf stamp (Mi. #1349) depicts a diesel-electric locomotive.

From Wikipedia, "The defining characteristic of diesel-electric transmission is that it avoids the need for a gearbox, by converting the mechanical force of the diesel engine into electrical energy (through a dynamo) and using the electrical energy to drive traction motors, which propel the vehicle mechanically."

Here is a large (38.5mm x 82mm) advertising label for the Southern Pacific Railroad's "Coast Daylight" service between San Francisco and Los Angeles, California. The engine shown is a 4-8-4 configuration steam locomotive. Label dates from 1937-43.

From the spdaylight.net website, "The streamlined Daylight began running on March 21, 1937. Initially, 12 Pullman passenger cars were hauled by GS-2 steam locomotives. Later, more passenger cars and newer steam engines were added as ridership increased. A southbound train in San Francisco (Train 98) and a northbound train in Los Angeles (Train 99) would leave at the same time. Both would depart at 8:15 am and arrive at their destination at 6:00 pm, traveling 471 miles in 9 hours 45 minutes."

Here is the low value 5 pf stamp (Mi #2254) from the DDR's 1977 set of 5 stamps depicting items from the collection of the Dresden Transportation Museum. It shows the "Muldenthal" steam locomotive (1861). This is the second oldest, completely intact, original steam locomotive in Germany.

The oldest, completely intact, original steam locomotive in Germany is a 1435mm/gauge 1860 Sieg locomotive in the Deutsches Technik Museum in Berlin.
