I have the first Van Damme book and can't find this thing anywhere. I *think* it is 1876. Anyone seen one before or know anything about it? Is there a value for this? Thanks!

I didn't see it in Forbin, but I did spot Dawson Mining Court law stamps, which had heretofore passed under my radar. Something else for me to look for. So thanks for that, and good luck on your hunt. |

I have the 31st edition van Dam book, and it's not in there either. Ironically, there's an ad on the last page from van Dam trying to sell Canada Tobacco stamps ... and the picture is one that is not listed in the catalogue (differs from your stamp).

Thanks for the input - in the latest edition, is there an email address to contact him at? |

Thanks Brian, I found an article on that site describing what I have. Interesting history! |

And what may the history/ value be? I've seen a couple amazing huge collections of Can revenues and never seen that little beauty before. Not predicting the future but alot of revenues both US and Canadian are slowly coming into their own and since values are usually based on current selling trends the ones that don't usually appear may be extremely undervalued. |

Looks like there is an old catalog by Brandom that lists these. Anyone heard of this catalog? |

Hi Stamps
These were issued as early as 1872.
They are listed in the Lee W. Brandom catalog. Yours appears to be from the Montreal Division. It was listed at $4.00 in the original catalog with the catalog number M-162. Some of these stamps were later overprinted wth the word "REMOVAL". I know that the catalogue values are not in line with today's market but it pays to stop in the E.S.J. van Dam site every so often.
The Lee W. Brandom book was a BNAPS published handbook in 1976. I was fortunate enough to receive mine free because I was once a member of the BNAPS Revenue Study Group. A second catalog was published in 1980 and also included Canadian Liquor Seals. This one I bought lol.
Hope this helps

That helps a ton! Although if you could add a few more 0's to the value, that would be swell ;)
Thanks again everyone, mystery solved! |

There's an interesting note in the back of the 2009 ESJ Van Dam revenues catalogues. It accompanies a page of stamp / document photos for items such as playing card precancels, hunting licenses, etc. Quote: Other interesting Canadian revenue items that are being considered for inclusion in future editions of the Canadian revenue stamp catalogue. ... Tobacco stamps are currently not being considered. Ryan |

Quote: Tobacco stamps are currently not being considered I'm curious as to why? Looking at the ESJ van Dam website, he has lots and lots of tobacco stamps for sale. Many have the comment "unlisted" and are priced in the hundreds of $$. It kind of bothers me, actually, that they would sell "unlisted" tobacco stamps for so much money, but not provide a basis for their prices. |

I tend to agree with Rileysan.
These tobacco and cigarette stamps are quite popular and are sellers for any revenue stamp dealers. I am surprised really why these stamps have not been listed in the Van Dam catalogues before now. It would be great if they were included.
